What Buyers Should Know

Brownsville ISD is the largest district in the southern Rio Grande Valley (~38,000 students across 7 high schools), serving Brownsville. Hanna HS, Pace HS, Porter HS, Rivera HS, Lopez HS, Veterans Memorial HS, and the BISD Early College HS anchor the district.

TSAHC’s Homes for Texas Heroes program lists five public school roles: full-time classroom teachers, teacher aides, school librarians, school counselors, and school nurses. Brownsville ISD employees in those roles may qualify for down payment and closing cost help of up to 5% of the loan amount, with no first-time-buyer requirement, and a 2026 income limit of about $172,550 in Cameron County, at any household size.

School jobs outside those five, such as administrators and support staff, aren’t on TSAHC’s Heroes list, but those employees may still qualify for Home Sweet Texas, which offers the same kind of assistance with a Cameron County limit of about $152,250. First-time buyers may also be able to add a Mortgage Credit Certificate.
